East Lansing, Mich. – Led by freshman Catalina Monroy, who fired a 3-under par 67, Michigan State’s women’s golf team moved into first place among 17 teams after two rounds at the Tar Heel Invitational, being played at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played on the par-70, 6,081-yard course at Finley Golf Club. The final round of the tournament will be played on Sunday.
The Spartans shot a 3-over par 283 in Saturday’s second round – the second-best round of the tournament – and moved into first place at 9-over 569 (286-283).
Tennessee is in second place at 12-over par 572, with Louisville in third place at 14-over par 574, Wake Forest fourth at 15-over par 575 and Duke in fifth place (16-over par 576).
Monroy was tied for 34th place after the first round, but came out firing on the front, with three birdies and an eagle. She finished her round with five birdies and a 3-under par 67. Monroy is tied for 8th place individually at 1-over par 141 (74-67).
Senior Katie Lu had the team’s second-best round of the day with a 1-under par 69 and is tied for 11th place at 2-over par 142 (73-69).
Sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia is tied for 14th place at 4-over par 144 (71-73) and senior Brooke Biermann is tied for 19th place at 5-over par 145 (71-74).
Junior Taylor Kehoe is tied for 34th place at 7-over par 147 (71-76).
Michigan State tees off at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, playing alongside Tennessee and Louisville.
