STOCKTON, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2024) – Freshman Dylan Burcham fired a 4-under, 67, to lead Washington State Men’s Golf during the first round of play at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational Monday, played on the par-71, 6,566-yard Stockton Golf and Country Club.
At a team, the Cougars ended the first day tied for fifth at 3-under, 281, nine strokes off the lead held by San Diego, and six back of second-place Pacific.
Burcham, playing in his fourth collegiate event, was in control for the majority of his round. After starting with 10-straight pars, Burcham posted four-consecutive birdies to get to four under. Two bogeys sandwiched a birdie before he closed his opening round with a birdie on the last hole, giving him 32 on the back and 67 for the round, tied for fourth overall. The 67 ties his low round as a Cougar, set on the final day of the season-opening Palouse Invitational.
Junior Sam Renner, who entered the tournament having fired under par for each of his last six rounds, made it seven-straight with a 1-under, 70, Monday. After a slow start that saw him bogey each of his first three holes, Renner settled the ship, posting five birdies and just one bogey the rest of the way to finish tied for 19th overall.
Freshman Tate Bruggeman ended his first 18 holes at 1-over, 72. Bruggeman birdied the par-5 second followed by six-straight pars before closing his front nine with a bogey-5 for an even-par, 35. On the back side, he sandwiched three bogeys around a pair of pars to end his day tied for 46th overall. Also at 1-over, 72, is redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida, whose first round card included six birdies, nine pars, a bogey, double and triple bogey.
Graduate student Jakob Chicoyne posted eight pars and a bogey on the front, before finishing the back at 3-over for a first-round score of 4-over, 75, which included just one birdie. Freshman Garrett Harrison, playing as an individual, had three birdies against three bogeys for an even-par, 71, on his first round, tied for 33rd.
Second round play at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational begins at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.
