Stanford, Calif. – Sun Devil Women’s Golf opened the Stanford Intercollegiate with a solid effort on Friday.

Hosted at Stanford Golf Course, the field features eight of the Top-25 teams in the initial Scoreboard rankings. No. 4 Arizona State fired a 286 (+2) in the first round, which has them in fifth place in the 19-team field. Host No. 3 Stanford has the lead at -11, with No. 14 Texas, No. 12 Virginia, and Princeton rounding out the rest of the Top-5. The Maroon and Gold ended their round on a high note, as the team recorded ten birdies over their final six holes.

The Sun Devils were led by junior Beth Coutler, who got off to a great start in the opening round. She carded a 68 (-3) and finds herself tied for second after the first 18 holes thanks to a five-birdie performance. Not far behind is fellow junior Paula Schulz-Hanssen, who shot a 70 (-1) to end in a tie for 15th after day one. She is tied with freshman Isla McDonald-O’Brien (-1/70), as she continues to contribute positively in only her fourth collegiate start. Senior Grace Summerhays looks to build off the three birdies she buried over her final six holes.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye‘s team is still in contention for the team lead, with Beth Coulter sitting only two strokes back in the individual race. The Sun Devils will play the tournament with only four golfers, as Patience Rhodes withdrew prior to the round due to injury. Despite the circumstances, ASU still delivered a competitive effort on Friday. Three of the four golfers in the lineup finished under par. Arizona State will attempt to make up ground in the second of three rounds starting tomorrow at 8:36 AM MST.
