Derksen, Koelle Lead UW During Day One At The Golf Club Of Georgia

MARIETTA, Ga. – Washington finds itself in the middle of the pack after the opening day of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Friday.

The Huskies concluded the opening day in Georgia in ninth place after carding a four-over 292.

“We had a little bit of everything from our guys today,” head coach Alan Murray. “We got off to a great start but the course bears its teeth on the back nine and we leaked a little oil coming in. However, I was pleased with what we saw today.”

Abel Derksen and Finn Koelle led the charge for Washington during Round One, firing respective 71s, one shot under par.

Derksen got off to a flying start with three-straight birdies to open his round, and finished the front nine with a bang, sinking an eagle put on hole No. 9. The freshman hit a rough patch with three consecutive bogeys on the back nine but capped his round by birdying 18 to set a new career-best round.

Meanwhile, Koelle was consistent as usual, mixing in five birdies with 11 pars to join Derksen in a tie for 14th.

“Really good rounds from Finn and Abel today,” Murray said. “It’s always good to shoot an under par score on this golf course.”

Drew Warford enjoyed a bogey-free front nine, finishing his round tied for 41st at two-over, two strokes ahead of Jack Murphy, who will begin the second round tied for 55th. Jake Foley rounded out the day for Washington, sitting tied for 69th at six-over.

The Huskies will tee off of hole No. 1 on Saturday for the second round. Murphy will get things started for the Huskies at 5 a.m. PT.
