SAUCIER, Miss. – The Fighting Illini men’s golf program, ranked No. 13 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll and No. 15 in the initial NCAA men’s golf team ranking of the season, travels south to the gulf coast for the penultimate team stroke play event of the fall schedule. The Illini are in action Saturday-Monday, Sept. 19-21, at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, co-hosted by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Southern Miss, at Fallen Oak at Beau Rivage Resort.
THE SETTING
The Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational wll be contested on the Par-72, 7,487-yard Fallen Oak Course at Fallen Oak at Beau Rivage Resort. Recognized as the state’s top course, Fallen Oak was designed by legendary course architect Tom Fazio. It features an 18-hole, par-72 championship layout and is nestled among the De Soto National Forest in Saucier, Miss.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days with 18 holes set for Saturday-Monday. Rounds 1 and 2 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, will begin with tee times at 9:30 a.m. CT. Monday’s finale will tee off beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
THE FIELD
The tournament field features 13 programs vying for the title, highlighted by 10 teams ranked inside the top 65 of the NCAA men’s golf team ranking. The No. 15 Illini will face five SEC opponents ranked inside the top 30: No. 2 Ole Miss, No. 5 LSU, No. 22 Mississippi State, No. 23 South Carolina and No. 29 Georgia. The field includes two additional top-40 programs in No. 32 UNLV and No. 36 Kansas. Three other Big Ten programs – No. 48 Purdue, No. 61 Iowa and No. 108 Wisconsin – are set to tee off, with Southern Miss (158) and UTSA (184) rounding out the field.
