Cal Posts Lowest Opening-Round Score Of Season

Noh Ties Her Best Round Of The Year

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – A hot start and a 2-under-par 71 opening round by senior Kaylyn Noh resulted in the lowest round-one score of the season for the California women’s golf team Monday at the Nanea Invitational.

The Golden Bears ended the day at 2-over 294 as a team, placing them in sixth place and two strokes out of the top five heading into Tuesday.

All five Bears in the lineup started the day 2-under, each putting away two birdies before a single bogey. Through five holes, Cal led the 11-team field – one that includes three teams ranked in the top eight nationally – with a combined 7-under start.

While the Bears’ momentum tailed off on the back nine, Noh ended things strong with two more birdies on holes 6 and 9 to eventually settle in 12th place individually.

After opening up with birdies on her very first two holes, senior Jieming Yang shot up the leaderboard with another strong stretch in the middle of the day, picking up birdies on holes 4 and 6 to put her at 3-under early on the back nine. She finished the day in 26th place at 1-over, tied with sophomore Constance Fouillet. Yang’s five birdies were the most on the team and ranked 10th in the 60-golfer field.

Junior Adora Liu ended the round at 2-over 73 to place 34th after 18 holes. Freshman Marie-Agnes Fischer was one stroke behind Liu to put her in 41st place.

Cal will be back at Nanea Golf Club for another shotgun start Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. PT.
