Hannah Kono fired two strong rounds to lead the Nebraska women’s golf team on the opening day of the Hurricane Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Fla., on Monday.
Kono, a sophomore from Enkoping, Sweden, began the day with a 73 (+1) before recording an even-par 72 in the second round on the 6,175-yard layout at Biltmore. She enters Tuesday’s final round in a tie for seventh at 145 (+1).
The Huskers, who enter the final round in fifth place in the 11-team field, also got solid rounds from Lauren Thiele (73-76). The sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., closed the day in a tie for 26th at 149 (+5).
Seniors Miu Takahashi and Andrea Velez and sophomore Arden Louchheim sit just one shot back of Thiele in a tie for 31st at 150.
Louchheim produced an opening-round 72 that included an eagle on the 465-yard, par-5 seventh hole. She is playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup in Miami.
Eden Lohrbach rounds out the Nebraska contingent in a tie for 39th at 151 (+7) after rounds of 74 and 77.
The hosts from Miami lead the tournament with a two-round total of 574 (-2). The Hurricanes carry an eight-stroke lead over Florida Gulf Coast (582) into Tuesday’s final round. South Alabama and Iowa are just six strokes in front of the Huskers in a tie for third place at 585.
Nebraska finished the first 36 holes at 591 (+15), maintaining a narrow edge in front of Florida International (593), Florida Atlantic (594) and North Florida (595).
Miami’s Olivia Gronborg and Eastern Michigan’s Savannah de Bock own the top spots on the individual leaderboard at 139 (-5). The duo carries a three-stroke lead over Stetson’s Filippa Jansson (142).
Tuesday’s final round at the Hurricane Invitational is set for a 7:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start with live scoring available from GolfStat.
