ATLANTA – Freshman Kylie Chong and senior Xin (Cindy) Kou played the heroes as they each went into extra holes to claim the semifinal victory over UCLA, 3-2, on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the East Lake Cup.
No. 1-seeded USC prevailed in the Crosstown Showdown as it dramatically took down the No. 4 seeded-Bruins. The Trojans will now compete for their fourth East Lake Title in their fifth trip to the event; USC last won in 2018.
Junior Catherine Park took home the first score of the day for both squads, dominating her competition 6&5. Park remained steady throughout the round as she won all six of her holes before hole No. 10. The junior started her route right from the start as she won the second hole with a par on the par three.
After taking the first score of the day, UCLA followed up by taking the next two points. Even with the 2-1 score, the Trojans were in the driver’s seat as Kou and Chong both held their respective leads, but a late surge by the Bruins pushed the deciding matches into extras. Kou was the first to head into the tiebreaker stage, as she dropped the last two holes of the round (No. 17 & 18). The senior and UCLA’s Natalie Vo stalemated for the first two holes before Kou eventually won on a two-putt on hole 17.
Chong faced a similar fate as her teammate, as she took an early lead before the Bruins’ Tiffany Le tied it on the final hole. The freshman was even through the first two holes of play but found her opportunity on hole No. 17. Chong birdied the hole and finalized the score, as she cemented the Trojans’ spot in the East Lake Cup Championship.
USC continues its run at the East Lake Cup as it will play LSU in the championship tomorrow at 7:40 a.m./10:40 a.m. at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
