SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah Men’s Golf Head Coach Garrett Clegg has been named the 2023-24 recipient of the Don Reddish Award, Utah Athletics announced on Tuesday. Clegg will receive the award at halftime of Utah football’s Nov. 23 game against Iowa State.
Named in honor of the legendary former Utah swimming & diving head coach, the Reddish Award is presented annually to the leader of an Olympic sport at the U deemed to have had the most successful season.
“It is an honor to be recognized with this award,” Clegg said. “As a coach, you win an award based on how your players play, so this is a true reflection of how our players competed over the year. We had a fantastic year. The men on our team did an incredible job, so I’m honored to receive the award, and I feel very privileged. But mostly privileged to work with those guys. For me, this is a reflection of all of their hard work and dedication.”
Clegg directed one of the best Utah Men’s Golf seasons in school history, using both a strong regular season and postseason to find success in the NCAA Tournament. During the 2023-24 regular season, the Utes finished with a team score of at or under par six times, including five times in six spring tournaments. They posted an even mark at The Goodwin to take second place, ahead of 29 other teams, including four ranked programs. Atop the standings, Braxton Watts finished ahead of a field of 168 golfers to earn his first collegiate victory. In the ensuing tournament, Utah carding a score of 20-under at the Gaucho Invitational, where two Utes tied for second place.
Javier Barcos ended the year with an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection, making him the first Utah golfer to ever earn All-Pac-12 status three times.
The Utes continued their season into the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a performance at the NCAA Austin Regional in which Utah jumped over a pair of squads late on the final day to lock up a spot at the NCAA Championships, finishing in fourth for their best regional showing in school history. This propelled Utah to compete in Nationals for the second time in three seasons, marking just the second time in program history Utah has reached the NCAA Championships multiple times in such a short span since 1948-50.
