TEE OFF
Fresh off its third straight victory, the Florida women’s golf team continues the spring at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge from Feb. 2-4.
THE FIELD (NCAA Rankings as of Nov. 13)
Arizona (No. 8), Arizona State (No. 7), Cal, Cal Poly, Clemson, Florida, Georgetown, Miami, Ohio State, Oregon (No. 6), Pepperdine, San Jose State, South Carolina (No. 3), Texas (No. 5), UCLA, and USC (No. 4).
LAST TIME OUT
The Gators won its third straight tournament in the spring opener at the Sea Best Intercollegiate after ralliing down five shots late in the round to win at 7-under by three shots. Four UF golfers placed in the top-13 led by Inès Archer in T4 at 3-under.
Florida and Illinois State battled back and forth for the lead through the final 18-holes at San Jose Country Club. With 16 total holes left to score across the lineup, ISU held a five shot lead over UF before a 1-under push and a stretch of birdies from Inès Archer, Paula Francisco and Siuue Wu pushed the Gators ahead of the Redbirds for a three-shot victory.
The win marks the third overall and consecutive win of the 2024-25 season. It also is back-to-back seasons UF has won three tournaments for the first time since 2015-16 & 2016-17 and the ninth occurrence in program history.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Last year the tournament was altered to match play due to weather and the Gators took 3rd going 2-1 with wins over No. 4 UCLA and No. 20 Pepperdine.
Known prior as the Northrop Grumman Challenge, Therese Hession retired in January 2022 after 30 years as the head coach and director of golf at Ohio State. To honor the longtime coach, the tournament renamed the event in her honor.
Florida has competed in the event ten times. A few seasons prior, the Gators set the mark for second lowest team score, a 274 in 2017. The same year Taylor Tomlinson won medalist honors.
