COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland women’s golf head coach Kelly Hovland has signed a contract extension through the 2028-29 season, Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Damon Evans announced.
Hovland is currently in her fourth season leading the Terrapins. She has led the Terrapins to back-to-back NCAA Regionals appearances in 2023 and 2024.
“We are thrilled to extend Kelly as the head coach of our women’s golf program at Maryland,” said Barry P. Gossett Athletic Director Damon Evans. “Kelly has been a vital part of the most successful seasons in Maryland women’s golf history. We are excited for her to continue to build on the momentum of the team’s success in NCAA Regionals and nationally.”
“It is a privilege to be the head women’s golf coach at the University of Maryland,” Hovland said. “I am grateful to Damon Evans for his continued support and leadership. I love being a Terp and look forward to continuing to raise the expectations of our program on and off the golf course.”
During the 2022-23 season, Hovland led the No. 36 Terps to six top-five team finishes, including coaching to Patricie Mackova to her first collegiate victory at the Yale Invitational, helped coach Nicha Kanpai to one the best freshman seasons in program history, a fourth place team finish at the Big Ten Championship, and a NCAA Regionals appearance in Athens, Ga.
In 2023-24, Hovland led the Terrapins to five top five finishes, including two second-place finishes at the Chevron Collegiate and the Texas Showdown. The Terrapins set a new program record with their season scoring average of 290.29 and set a new record of 508 birdies as a team. Senior Patricie Mackova also broke the Terrapins’ record with her scoring average of 72.83.
At the Chevron Collegiate, the Terrapins set the program record for lowest team total score at 835 (279-275-287), which was -29. In the event, Kanpai shot a 204 (69-66-69), which was -12 and set a program record for lowest individual 54-hole score. Both Mackova and Kanpai won individual events on the year and went on to earn All-Big Ten honors.
Hovland served as an assistant coach at Maryland for two seasons (2019-21) before being tapped to serve as interim head coach in June 2021. While serving as an assistant coach, she helped coach the Terrapins to back-to-back record-setting seasons. Under Hovland’s guidance,…
