USC Women’s Golf Posts Two Players Within the Top Five After Round One

PALM DESERT, Calif. – USC women’s golf was one of two squads under par in the first round, as it sits second out of 21 teams at one-under par after day one at the Alice and John Wallace Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Monterey Country Club. 

The Trojans were led by junior Catherine Park and senior Xin (Cindy) Kou, as they were two under par for the round. USC counted a 69-69-71-74 (283) as they are seven strokes out of the lead; Oregon is first at eight-under par. 

Park was steady as the leader of the squad today, as she posted only one bogey within the front nine. That was her lone blemish on the day, as she utilized three straight birdies – holes No. 14-16 – to give her a 32 (-3) on the backside. Park’s back half earned her a 69 (-2) and gave her to her sixth round in the 60s this season. 

Kou continued her string of success from the previous tournament, as she is tied with Park at fifth in the field. Kou played the course similarly, as she was three-over par (39) on the front nine. On the back nine, Kou enjoyed one of the best nine holes of any Trojan this season, as she had five birdies in nine holes to make her two-under par. 

Freshman Jasmine Koo was the lone USC golfer to flip the switch as she had an under-par first half followed by an over-par back half. Koo found success early with three birdies in her first five holes but slowed with a double bogey on hole nine. The freshman would record two more bogeys and one birdie as she finished even-par and is tied for 10th in the field. 

Sophomore Bailey Shoemaker had the last counting score with a three-over-par day, tied for 39th. Freshman Kylie Chong rounded out the lineup as she was four over par and tied for 51st. 

In her collegiate debut, redshirt junior Jiarui (Joyce) Jin finished tied for 62nd at five-over par as an individual competitor.

USC returns to action tomorrow for round two of the Alice and John Wallace Classic at 8:30 a.m. at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
