Renner Leads WSU During First Round at The Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2025) – Junior Sam Renner shot a 4-under-par, 67, to lead Washington State Men’s Golf during the first round at The Prestige Monday, played on the par-71, 7,127-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. Renner’s round included six birdies against two bogeys as he sits tied for fourth after 18 holes, one shot behind a trio of golfers.

The Cougars shot 12-over, 296, on the round after it was determined freshman Dylan Burcham had signed an incorrect score card and was disqualified from the round. Instead of counting Burcham’s 2-under, 69, that score was removed and the remaining four scores all counted towards WSU’s total. North Carolina leads after the first round after shooting a 9-under, 275.

Starting on the back side, Renner opened his round with a birdie on 10 before bogeys on 13 and 16 put him 1-over after seven holes. He quickly reversed course with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to finish his first nine at 1-under, 36. On the front side, Renner played mistake-free, recording birdies on holes 3, 5 and 7, surrounded by six pars to finish at 4-under, 67, on the round,

Redshirt senior Drayton Joseph opened his day with seven-straight pars after starting on Hole 10 before a bogey-birdie finish ended his first nine holes at even-par. After the turn, he fired five more pars before a bogey on 6 and a double on 9 ended his round with a 3-over, 74, tied for 78th overall.

Redshirt-sophomore Ben Borgida began his day with back-to-back birdies on Holes 10 and 11 but managed just one more birdie the rest of the round as he struggled to an opening-day, 6-over, 77, tied for 102nd. Senior Franklin Lydra shot an opening-round of 8-over, 79, managing two birdies on the day, as he sits tied for 110th after his first 18 holes.

Play continues Tuesday morning at the Prestige, with the Cougars set for an 11 a.m. tee-time.
