PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Scarlet Knights men’s golf team heads to Bluffton, South Carolina to compete in the Colleton River Collegiate tournament this week.
In this charity tournament, hosted by Big Ten rival Michigan State, the Scarlet Knights will be competing against fellow Big Ten teams Iowa, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, and Minnesota, among other universities across the country.
Senior captain Weston Jones looks to carry over his excellent performance at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate a few weeks ago in Puerto Rico, where he led the tournament in birdies, and finished fourth overall in the standings.
“A lot of things went right in Puerto Rico,” said Jones. “I hit a lot of greens and didn’t have to chip much. I was focused on my mental game and want to keep that going this weekend.”
The Scarlet Knights’ mental and short game will be imperative this time around because Colleton River was designed by course architect Pete Dye.
“Pete Dye golf courses require a lot of discipline,” head coach Rob Shutte said. “The greens are in perfect shape, so it’s gonna be a lot of controlling the golf ball in all aspects.”
Shutte looks to build off encouraging signs from a few weeks ago, and there’s no better place to do it than Colleton River.
“Last week we had a great training trip in South Carolina and got to simulate a lot of the short game on the course,” Shutte said. “They’re gonna change the setup a bit from last year, so I’m expecting an almost championship setup, so it’s gonna be a challenge”
And it’s a challenge Weston Jones is ready to handle, especially after his recent performances.
“This course coming up is a really, really good test, and I’m fired up,” Jones said.
The Scarlet Knights tee off beginning Sunday morning March 2nd, and end their trip Monday, March 3rd.
