ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. – The Rutgers men’s golf team is set to host their third-annual tournament, the Johnnie-O at the Sea Island resort on St. Simon’s Island, just off the east coast of Georgia on Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18.
Avid golf fans may recognize Sea Island as a FedEx cup course played on during the RSM Classic on the PGA tour. Located on a beautiful ocean backdrop, this professional level course will be a tough test for head coach Rob Shutte and his team.
“I expect the course to be fair but challenging,” said Shutte. “People come to the Johnnie-O to expect a challenge. We are super excited to host this event for the third-straight year.”
A notable Johnnie-O veteran is senior captain Noah Kumar. Kumar hopes to use this experience to help him and his teammates have a successful tournament.
“Seeing this course before I know it’s going to play tough, and the weather can be a toss up,” said Kumar. “For us, it’s about staying patient and not forcing shots, that will be the key to success this week.”
The Johnnie-O marks the halfway point in the Scarlet Knights season, and they look to continue to build on a promising start to the year.
“I think there’s a lot to improve upon from the last two tournaments,” said Kumar. “We just need everyone on board and firing on all cylinders.”
“These setups are there to test these guys to make the adjustment of an aspiring professional,” said Coach Shutte. “We have the game plan. We have the strategy, so hopefully we can go and execute. It’s pretty straightforward, we just have to go out there and do it” said Shutte.
The Scarlet Knights tee off beginning bright and early at 8:45 a.m. Monday morning, and the action ends Tuesday afternoon.
