Men's Golf's Pair of Freshmen Shine at The Hootie

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Scarlet Knights completed their fourth and penultimate tournament earlier this week in Charleston, South Carolina at “The Hootie” Intercollegiate.

Despite the Scarlet Knights never competing on this specific course, they were led by strong performances from a pair of freshmen Argyle Downes and Bennett Espenshade.

Downes finished in the top 50, finishing 35th overall, while Espenshade once again established a new career-high finish for himself, finishing tied for 22nd overall.

“I felt pretty confident with where my swing was,” said Espenshade. “The course was super wide open and there weren’t many uncomfortable tee boxes so I could let the ball fly.”

Reflecting on his early season goals, Espenshade has certainly noticed a difference in his game.

“My driver has gotten a lot better, and I’m starting to get comfortable switching to a cut in the bag, and all the work I’ve put into my swing is starting to pay off,” he said.

His hard work has certainly not gone unnoticed, either.

“Bennett gets better every week,” head coach Rob Shutte said. “Colleton was his best finish to date and he set a new mark at The Hootie. He’s such a great competitor.”

With the calendar approaching April, the final month of the season, the Scarlet Knights freshmen have started to blossom.

“Both of those freshmen led us, they were explosive, and you’re starting to see all that experience they’ve gotten from the fall, and now they look and act like they belong,” said Shutte.

“It’s always great to lead the team and set an example as a freshman,” said Espenshade. “I’ve learned a lot from the seniors and they’ve had nice finishes for us, so it’s nice to help them and the team out a bit.”

The Scarlet Knights next tee off on April 5th, at “The Haskins” in Augusta, Georgia.
