James Wins Individual Title, Women's Golf Wins Team Title at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women’s golf won the team title for the second straight season at the Rutgers Invitational, beating the field by 30 strokes on Sunday afternoon at the Rutgers University Golf Course.

Emily James won the individual title at 6-over to earn the first title of her career. She picked up the victory in wire-to-wire fashion after leading following the first day of play.

“It was a full team effort to defend our title at home this weekend,” head coach Kari Williams said. “Conditions were tough across all three rounds with the cold, wind and rain, but our group dug in and battled hard for 54 holes. It’s always fun to be able to compete on your home course in front of friends and family, and I am happy we were able to get the job done today. Emily has worked tirelessly on her game this spring and it was great to see it all come together for her first collegiate win. We did a lot of great things on the course this weekend and this experience will be good for us to build on as we get ready for the Big Ten Championship in two weeks.”

Round 3 – Sunday, April 6th

Weather: Cloudy, light rain, Temps in low 50s, 5-15 mph winds

James continued her strong play in the final round, shooting a 2-over 73 to earn the individual title by two strokes. She played the front nine at even-par and picked up three birdies on the day.

“It was great to capture the team win at our home event today,” James said. “We’ve worked hard all spring and that effort paid off in tough conditions this weekend. I’m pleased with my game and I am proud that I played steady golf out here. I was able to put a few approach shots close for good birdie opportunities and I’ll look to keep this momentum going through our next few weeks.”

Finishing right behind James was true freshman Joline Truong, who shot a 1-over 72 to take solo second place. In her final round, Truong played the front nine at even-par with a birdie and seven pars, rolling in three birdies on the day.

Lorena Rossettin and Grace Lu tied for third to make the top four finishers all Scarlet Knights. Rossettin had the low round of the tournament, shooting a 2-under 69 in the final round. She played the front nine 2-under par with birdies on 4 and 9 to highlight her day.

Lu was able to bounce back after being 4-over on the front nine, birdieing 16 and shooting a 5-over 76 on the day to earn the top-five finish.

Lucrezia Rossettin rounded out the team competitors, finishing tied for 20th with a 17-over…
