Mattias Varjun Named SEC Golfer of the Week

After lifting his first career trophy on Tuesday, graduate student Mattias Varjun of University of Missouri men’s golf was honored by the SEC on Wednesday as the league’s Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Varjun finished first at the Tiger Intercollegiate for his first career individual title in his 42nd collegiate tournament. The graduate student carded a four-under 206 over the three rounds (70-70-66) to win the crown by four strokes. Varjun also helped Mizzou to the team title as the Tigers won their first championship of the season by eight strokes.

The 206 score by Varjun is a new career high, while the 66 during the third round also established a career best. During the final 18 holes of play, Varjun carded one eagle and four birdies after entering the round in second place. Overall, he tallied one eagle and 11 birdies during the 54-hole tournament and his mark of -7 on par fours were five strokes better than any other golfer in the 99-player field.

The weekly accolade is the first time a Tiger has collected SEC Golfer of the Week honors this season.

Varjun and the Tigers are back in action in less than a week, competing at the Mossy Oak Collegiate, starting on Monday.
