Men’s Golf Aims to Maintain Momentum at Old Waverly


University of Missouri men’s golf looks to continue its strong play as of late when it competes at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, hosted by Mississippi State.

TOURNAMENT INFO

The tournament begins on Monday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The teams are set for 36 holes of action on the opening day before one final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, starting with tee times at 8 a.m.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The teams are set to compete at Old Waverly Golf Club, a par-72 course that measures 7,088 yards in length.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION

Joining the Tigers are the course are No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 15 Alabama, No. 32 Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Memphis, Murray State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, ULM and UTEP.

LAST TIME OUT

Mizzou continued its momentum by sweeping the titles at the Tiger Intercollegiate last week. MU won its first team title of the season with an eight-stroke victory over Saint Mary’s, finishing first of 18 schools overall.

Meanwhile, Mattias Varjun won his first collegiate title in his 42nd career tournament when he won the individual crown by four strokes. Varjun collected SEC Golfer of the Week honors following the victory.

FOUR TOP-10 FINISHERS

Not only did Mattias Varjun won the individual crown at the Tiger Intercollegiate but four Mizzou golfers, overall, finished in the top 10. Freshman Trent Mierl placed third and was followed by Veikka Viskari in fifth and Bubba Chapman in eighth.

It marked the first time in three years that Mizzou had four different golfers finish in the top 10 of a single tournament.

MOMENTUM ON MIZZOU’S SIDE

The Tigers have played their best golf over the last seven rounds.

Starting with the final round of The General Hackler Invitational, Mizzou has averaged a 281.3 stroke average in its last seven rounds with an average of 3.0 golfers carding scores at under par or even par in each round. Prior to the run, the Tigers were averaging a team stroke average of 294.0, with an average of 1.1 individual rounds of even or under par per round.

Mattias Varjun has made the biggest improvement during that time, carding a 70 or lower in all seven rounds – he had posted a 70 or under twice in his first 17 rounds of the season. Overall, Varjun leads Mizzou with a 69.3 average over the last seven rounds (averaged 75.2 prior), followed…
