University of Missouri women’s golf completed its best round in its SEC Championship history, with the team and junior Melanie Walker both recording the lowest score in program history at the championship.
In a field that includes 10 teams in the top-25 nationally, Melanie Walker landed a spot in the top-10 after the first round, carding a two-under 68 to open the tournament tied for ninth. Her 68 ties Jessica Yuen in 2017 for the lowest ever by a Tiger at the SEC championship. She found scoring opportunities all day, finishing the round with seven birdies, including three in a row on holes 13, 14 and 15.
Two other Tigers finished the day in the top-50 in the field that features 80 golfers in the tournament. Sophomore Fleur van Beek finished the day with a two-over 72 in 38th, staying consistent with 14 pars throughout the day. Freshman Alexandra Berglund recorded a three-over 73 to finish in 48th behind an even par front-nine. Her day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 first.
Senior Ffion Tynan also found an eagle on the front-nine, posting a three on the par-5 seventh. She recorded a five-over 75 to finish 62nd on the day.
The Tigers are in a four-way tie for 12th at +8 in the first 18, sitting just five shots out of match play contention. Their 288 set a new program record at the SEC Championship, besting the previous record of 292 in the final round in 2017.
No. 4 South Carolina leads the field at -14.
Day two is set to tee off at 8 a.m. CT for Mizzou.
