Rhodes shoots 66 to put Women’s Golf in position at Gold Canyon Regional

GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The eight-time NCAA champion Arizona State Sun Devil women’s golf program continued solid play Tuesday at the NCAA Regional held at Superstition Mountain Golf Club in Gold Canyon.

One round remains on Wednesday, with the top five teams advancing to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (May 16-21). The Sun Devils are 20 shots clear of sixth-place, as they sit in third after two rounds of play. No. 8 ASU has shot even 576 (286-290) so far, five shots back of No. 5 Oregon (289-282=571/-5) and one shot back of No. 29 Oklahoma State (287-288=575/-1). No. 20 Mississippi State (291-294) is at 9-over 595 while No. 17 Auburn (289-205) is holding down fifth spot at 18-over 594. The closest team to the five-team cut line with 18 holes to play Wednesday is Cal State Fullerton at 20-over 596 (304-292).

Patience Rhodes is leading the Sun Devils with an 8-under 136 that included a 66 on Tuesday, as she is in second behind Oregon’s Kiara Romero (-12). Isla McDonald-O’Brien is tied for fifth at 2-under 142, joining Rhodes in the Top-5. Both Rhodes and McDonald-O’Brien have put forth important efforts over the two days to put their team in position to advance. Paula Schulz-Hanssen (T22) and Beth Coulter (T25) each look to continue the momentum they built from shooting one-under on the back nine. ASU has 29 birdies as a team, the second-highest total in the field.

The Sun Devil start the final round of the Gold Canyon Regional tomorrow morning at 8 AM MST on Hole 1. They look to maintain their spot in the Top-5, which would allow them to advance to the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year. Admission and parking is free at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.
