Sun Devil Women’s Golf in third after first round at NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The eight-time NCAA champion Sun Devil women’s golf team began their pursuit for another title on Friday afternoon at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.

No. 8 Arizona State (E/288) is tied for third after one day at the 2025 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, trailing only Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State on the team leaderboard. A strong start had the Sun Devils ahead of contenders such as No. 1 Stanford (+5/293), No. 2 Arkansas (+9/297), and No. 3 South Carolina (+9/297). ASU’s playing partner, No. 7 seed Wake Forest, faced similarly difficult conditions in the afternoon as the Sun Devils and shot 304 (+16). 

The Sun Devils have put themselves in good position for the initial cut to 15 teams after the third round on Sunday thanks to the efforts to a trio of golfers. Junior Beth Coulter was sensational, posting a 70 (-2) which is good enough for a spot in the Top-10. Not far behind in a tie for 18th is senior Grace Summerhays, who came through with a clutch 71 (-1) to start her third and final NCAA Championship run. Paula Schulz-Hanssen makes it three Sun Devils in the Top-30 on day one, as her even score of 72 has her tied for 27th. In a field of 156 golfers, Patience Rhodes (78) and Isla McDonald-O’Brien (111) have a chance to improve their positioning in a major way tomorrow.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye‘s team begins the second round of the 2025 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at 7:25 AM MST on the first hole tomorrow morning. Arizona State will look to continue the momentum built for a strong performance on Friday afternoon.
