Goode Claims California Amateur As Huskies Wrap Busy Week Of Competition

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – The newest Husky highlighted a jam-packed week of amateur action over the week for the Washington men’s golf team as Jacob Goode claimed the 114th California Amateur Championship at Granite Bay Golf Club.

Goode is the first UW golfer to win the California Amateur since Noah Woolsey took the title at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel, California. The win springboards the Northern California native to the U.S. Amateur, to be held at the Olympic Club Aug. 11-17.

“It means a lot to win this event,” Goode said. “This year’s U.S. Amatuer is being hosted by my home course, the Olympic Club. I’ve had this event circled on my calendar for years and to be playing in it will be a surreal experience.”

Goode, who officially signed with UW on June 10, topped Evan Liu in match play action on Saturday, up eight with six holes to play. After finishing the first 18 holes up three, Goode dominated the second 18, outscoring Liu on six of the first 11 holes to claim the trophy.

The San Francisco product advanced to the Round of 32 after two rounds of stroke play, firing back-to-back one-under 70s to reach match play.

After advancing through the Rounds of 32 and 16 at 4 & 2 and 1 up, respectively, Goode reached the semifinals in dramatic fashion, winning his quarterfinal matchup with Colorado’s Robby Keilch on the second playoff hole on Friday.

Despite already playing 20 holes through the morning, the senior continued onto the semis on Friday, defeating Claremont Mudd Scripps’ Mitchell Fedorka 4 & 2.
