Viskari Earns Bronze Medal at The Amateur Championship

Veikka Viskari – a rising junior with University of Missouri men’s golf – had a historic run by a Tiger at the 130th Amateur Championship this past week, earning a bronze medal at the prestigious tournament.

Competing at Royal St. George’s Golf Club – a venue that has hosted The British Open on 15 occasions (most recently as 2021) – Viskari earned his spot in match play after placing 35th of 288 golfers with a two-round score of three-under (69-70).

Viskari then won his opening round over Declan O’Donovan of Australia by two holes in the Round of 64, Laurenz Schiergen of Germany 5&4 in the Round of 32 and Rintaro Nakano of Japan 3&2 in the Round of 16, advancing to the quarterfinals.

In the final eight, Viskari posted his biggest win over Matthis Lefevere of France, who finished stroke play in fourth place at -7. Lefevere won the first three holes of the day but Viskari battled back and with wins on holes four, seven and eight, squared the contest heading into the back nine. Viskari would then again squaring the contest on the 15th hole and take the lead with a birdie on 16 before finishing par-par for the one-up victory.

Viskari’s run came to an end in the semifinals, however, falling to eventual champion Ethan Fang. Viskari is believed to be the first Tiger in school history to earn a medal at The Amateur Championship.

In his first season at Mizzou, Viskari finished third on the team with a 73.58 stroke average in 36 rounds of play. He recorded two top-five finishes as a sophomore at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational and Tiger Intercollegiate, while also twice leading the team in scoring.
