Faces in Golf Architecture: Tripp Davis

Tripp Davis is known for his hands-on approach and strategic detail in golf course architecture. He founded Tripp Davis and Associates (TDA) in 1994, and the firm is now considered one of the leading golf architecture practices in the world.

Davis grew up playing golf in Atlanta and was a three-time American Junior Golf Association All-American. He played collegiate golf at the University of Oklahoma, where he was an All-Big Eight selection and NCAA All-American. He was a member of the Oklahoma team that won the 1989 national championship.

After earning a degree in marketing and advertising from Oklahoma in 1990, Davis returned to study in the university’s Master of Landscape Architecture program. His thesis focused on the environmental impact of golf course construction and ways to improve and protect natural environments.

While in graduate school, Davis worked in golf course construction and later joined architect Charles Howard as a designer. He launched TDA after being selected to design two nine-hole courses for the State of Oklahoma.

As a player, Davis remained active in amateur golf while building his career. From 2000 to 2004, he was ranked among the top 40 amateurs in the U.S. He has played in 15 USGA championships, including being medalist at the 2003 U.S. Mid-Amateur and reaching the quarterfinals in 2005 and 2009.

With more than 25 years of experience, Davis is recognized for both original design and restoration, particularly at historic courses across the U.S. He combines a deep knowledge of land, a strong competitive background, and a builder’s eye for detail. He is currently working on a new course near Athens, Georgia, called The Rose, and is a proud member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects.
