PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men’s golf’s former standout Chris Gotterup delivered another historic performance on the national stage as he turned 26 years old on Sunday.
Just seven days after winning the Scottish Open, the New Jersey native was incredible at the 152nd Open Championship at Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, finishing in third place in one of golf’s most prestigious major championships on his birthday.
The former Scarlet Knight carded a final-round 68 to finish the tournament at 4-under-par. He finished (-12) overall, just one shot behind Harris English and five strokes behind the champion Scottie Scheffler. Gotterup’s stellar play all week earned him the best finish by a Rutgers alumnus in this major and one of the top performances by an American at this year’s Open.
“On behalf of Rutgers Nation, the pride of hearing our University on the national stage has been incredible,” head coach Rob Shutte said. “It’s fun to see Chris show off that New Jersey toughness on the global scale. His pride, his talent, humility, and work ethic make this fun to watch for all of us. The pride and support we have felt from our RU fan base has been amazing. He’s showing the world what we at Rutgers have always known — that he’s capable of greatness.”
Gotterup entered the final round in contention and played fearless, confident golf down the stretch on Sunday, highlighted by precise iron play and clutch putting under links-style pressure.
He sank an incredible birdie putt on hole four on Sunday to begin his run towards the leaderboard. His final round of 67 helped him secure a third-place finish, marking a major career milestone, along with a hefty purse and a boost in the Official World Golf Ranking.
A 2022 Rutgers graduate and former Big Ten Player of the Year, Gotterup has rapidly ascended the PGA Tour ranks with powerful drives and an aggressive, composed mindset. His performance at Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club further cements his place as one of the game’s rising American stars. He is making a real run at a chance to represent the United States in the upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., on September 26-28.
