Jim McGlothlin, The Olde Farm founder, remembered

Jim McGlothlin founded The Olde Farm in Bristol, Virginia, in 2000. A 9-hole, par-3 short course called “The Orchard” was added in 2014.

According to his obituary, McGlothlin envisioned The Olde Farm as a place where friendships deepened, laughter echoed across fairways and dreams took root. It became one of the top-rated private golf clubs in the nation, but more importantly, reflected his values, generosity, kindness and commitment to others.

Designed by architect Bobby Weed, the course has received widespread praise.

“Jim’s unwavering support and vision were instrumental in bringing The Olde Farm to life – a course that remains deeply meaningful to me,” Weed said. “Rooted in southwest Virginia, The Olde Farm is a reflection of Jim’s beginnings, values and personal pride in the region’s heritage.”

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, the 7,119-yard, private, links-style course features bentgrass greens, tees and fairways. Amenities include a clubhouse, boardroom, wine cellar, golf shop, locker rooms, restaurants, driving range, event spaces and luxury cottages.

In 2010, McGlothlin hosted a fundraising tournament featuring Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and others, raising $15 million for Mountain Mission School — the largest single-day PGA Tour fundraiser at the time.

He did it again in 2018, hosting another tournament with golf pros and sports celebrities including Peyton Manning and Jerry West. It raised more than $56 million, setting a new record.

According to his obituary, McGlothlin was known for his belief in possibilities others could not see. He was described as brilliant, funny, demanding, generous and curious — someone who inspired bold thinking.

On the final day of his life, he played a great round of golf and shared a joyful dinner with his wife and friends.

“Jim’s legacy, love of golf, charitable commitment and service to others set a new benchmark that will endure for generations to come,” Weed said.
