With heavy winds playing a factor during Sunday’s action, Vilips suffered his worst round of the tournament with a 4-over 76 with five bogeys and just one birdie. The performance dropped Vilips down into a share of second on the individual leaderboard, two strokes behind Ohio State’s Adam Wallin.
“It was tough. I hit it pretty well today, but I just made a couple more mistakes than I did in the first two rounds,” Vilips said. “I didn’t make as many putts and I think that’s really all it was. It’s easy to make a couple bogeys on this course, but I just didn’t make it up with any birdies today.”
Regardless of a difficult third round, Vilips was enthusiastic about his position heading into tomorrow’s final trip around Omni La Costa North Course.
“I hung in there pretty well today and gave myself a good chance to do something tomorrow. I’ll have the same game plan tomorrow, just try to go out there and make a few more putts, continue to hit it well and see what happens.”
Barclay Brown and Michael Thorbjornsen each finished their Cardinal careers on Sunday, shooting a 74 and 78, respectively. Brown notched three birdies on the round, while Thorbjornsen was only able to tally one on the par-4 11th.
Freshman Ethan Gao reentered the fold with a 7-over 79, while Sean-Karl Dobson was Stanford’s non-scoring round with a 13-over 85.
Karl Vilips looks to join Sandy Tatum (1942), Tiger Woods (1996) and Cameron Wilson (2014) as the fourth individual NCAA champion in program history, as he will tee off the fourth and final round of stroke play on the 10th hole at 12:53 p.m. PT.
