Tennessee’s 2023-24 season—highlighted by three team tournament titles and a tied-for-first stroke play finish at the SEC Championships—featured eight top-four team finishes.
“It’s obviously not the end result we wanted this week, said head coach Brennan Webb. “(I) couldn’t be more proud of this team and what they have fought for this year and how much they fought through a bunch of adversity, how much they have grown as a team and individually.”
“They never stopped fighting, even all the way through today. We have been written off a bunch of times. (We were) written off after the first round. We were certainly written off in January. These guys, they just never stopped fighting and they kept going all the way to the end. It’s a fine line of success. We are going to miss by three shots over the course of 16 rounds of golf. It just is what it is, but the fact that we were here with a chance with a couple of holes to go speaks for what we’ve become as a program.”
Despite shooting the third-best round in the 15-team field and their best round of the tournament on Monday, UT missed the cut to advance to quarterfinal matches by three shots.
The Vols posted a 28-over four round total and shot 1-over in the final round to log their first NCAA Championships top-10 finish since 1981.
In his final tournament as a Vol, Bryce Lewis was Tennessee’s highest finisher after shooting 7-over an tying for 35th.
After starting the tournament with a 78, Lewis then went on to post a 71 in round two and pair of 73s in the third and fourth rounds.
Evan Woosley-Reed was Tennessee’s second-highest finisher after tying for 42nd and shooting 8-over for the tournament with rounds of 74,75,74 and 73.
On his 18th hole in the final round, Woosley-Reed holed out for eagle to shoot the 1-over 73.
Redshirt sophomore Lance Simpson concluded the NCAA Championships with a tied for 49th finish.
Simpson provided three counting rounds for the Vols over the course of the tournament, with his best round coming on Saturday when he shot a 71.
Redshirt senior Jake Hall capped off his final collegiate tournament with a 1-under 71 in round four to tie for 53rd.
The Knoxville, Tennessee, native posted a four-round total of 11-over with three counting rounds for the Vols.
