Sampson Zheng, Ethan Fang Honored By GCAA
CARLSBAD – California men’s golfers Sampson Zheng and Ethan Fang were named to the 2024 PING All-West Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Saturday. The announcement was made prior to the start of the second round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships at Omni La Costa.
Zheng and Fang were two of just 25 golfers to earn spots on the all-west region squad. It’s the second consecutive season that Zheng has received the honor, while Fang, a freshman, is a first-time honoree. The full list of GCAA/PING All-Region Teams can be viewed on collegiategolf.com.
Zheng once again anchored the Golden Bears throughout the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 70.46 strokes per round while shooting 15-under-par across nine events heading into the NCAA Championships. The senior is currently ranked 13th in the PGA TOUR University rankings and entered the NCAA Championships with five consecutive top-10 finishes since the start of March, including a tie for second at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional last week. Zheng was an All-Pac-12 First Team selection for the second straight season.
Fang proved to be an instant impact for the Golden Bears in his rookie year, earning a spot on both the All-Pac-12 Second Team and Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. He played in all 37 possible rounds across 12 stroke-play events prior to the NCAA Championships and averaged 71.48 strokes per round (2,465 total strokes, +15). The Plano, Texas, native recorded four top-10 finishes, all coming throughout eight events in the spring, and he tied for third at the Pac-12 Championship with a 2-over-par performance.
