Here’s a look at the week ahead (Aug 13-19) for Michigan State Athletics:
Women’s Soccer
The 2024-25 athletic year officially begins this week as women’s soccer is the first Spartan squad to take the field. No. 13 Michigan State travels to No. 15 Notre Dame on Thursday for the season opener. The Spartans are coming off back-to-back Big Ten Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, including advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2023.
Men’s Soccer
After a 3-2 exhibition victory Monday at Butler, the Spartans get one final tune-up on Friday night when Michigan State hosts UIC at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. Admission is free for the exhibition. Junior Jonathan Stout is a returning First Team All-North Region selection and was recently named a United Soccer Coaches Midfielder to Watch.
Men’s Basketball
Tom Izzo, now in his 30th season as Michigan State men’s basketball coach, and the Spartans will depart August 13 for a Foreign Tour in Spain. MSU will play three games on the tour, including one each in Madrid (Aug. 15), Valencia (Aug. 18) and Barcelona (Aug. 20). This will be the team’s first foreign tour during the summer since visiting Italy in 2015.
Men’s Golf
Senior Ashton McCulloch and freshman Julian Menser opened play in the US Amateur on Monday at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska Town Course in Chaska, Minnesota. The men’s golf team leaves Friday, August 15 for a Foreign Tour in Ireland, visiting courses in both Dublin and Belfast.

Incoming freshman Julian Menser tees off at 7:22 a.m. at Hazeltine (#1), while rising senior Ashton McCulloch starts at 1:14 p.m. on the Chaska Town Course (#1).
