MUSKOKA, Ontario – The Rutgers men’s golf team finished eighth at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational with a team score of (+18).
Despite strong individual performance in Round 1 at the top of the standings and a team second round finish of (-3), a challenging final round caused the Scarlet Knights’ eighth-place finish.
Senior captain Weston Jones and freshman Argyle Downes tied for first overall in the standings after shooting a 68 (-4) in the first round.
Rutgers men’s golf’s head coach Rob Shutte praised Downes for his performance throughout the tournament.
“It was impressive for a freshman to lead throughout all three rounds,” Shutte said. “You can see a lot of positives and potential from how he played that golf course well as a young golfer.”
Shutte was proud of the way Jones competed finishing seventh overall in the tournament.
“Weston bounced back and delivered strong performances in the first and third rounds,” Shutte said. “I’m excited about his development and how he’s embraced a new style of play with improved ball control and discipline.”
“I was really focused out there,” Jones said. “I played well in Minnesota during the first few rounds but let my game slip. I stuck with a good plan between tournaments and addressed areas I needed to work on, specifically driving and swing mechanics.”
Downes finished tied for 32nd at +6 (222), while Noah Kumar and Derek Gutierrez posted scores of 231 (+15) and 232 (+16), respectively.
Despite the tough finish, the team’s strong early-round performances were promising. They will look to build on this experience as they head into their next tournament, the Fighting Irish Classic, scheduled for October 6-7 in South Bend, Indiana.
