DALLAS – Freshman Jack Buchanan posted a 71 (-1) in the final round as he competed with the leaders to the finish, settling for a runner-up finish at 12-under par. Buchanan posted the best finish by a Trojan freshman since Yuxin Lin won the Southern Highlands Invitational in 2020. USC men’s golf posted a one-under-par final round as it dropped back two spots for a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The Trojans nearly posted even par across the board as they ended the final round with team scores of 71-72-72-72 (287) to finish at 26-under-par for the tournament. UNLV took home the team title as it was eight-under par in the final round and 34-under par total.
“Our preparation last week was intense, there was a lot of competition and resulted in solid play across the entire team this week,” head coach Mark Hankins said. “We got off to a great start with Jack leading the way, followed with great second round, but just fell short today. We put ourselves in a position to win the championship with nine holes to play, and will learn from that the next time we are this position.”
Jack Buchanan rallied late in the final round to birdie two of the last four holes, overcome a one-over par front nine, and posted a solid 71 (-1). That proved to be the best score of the day for USC as he took home a top-five performance in his first career start for the Trojans. Buchanan finished tied for runner-up with scores of 64-69-71 (204, -12).
“It was a good week. I had the low round, or co-low round of the tournament on the first day, shot 64,” Buchanan said. “Obviously, I would have liked to win the tournament, but finishing tied for second this week is nice. It’s a good little momentum booster for the next tournament.”
On the start of his career.
“It’s a pretty good place to start, finishing my first college tournament tied for second. I think it’s just echoing what I said, I played well. I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing when I’ve been practicing. I’ve been playing good golf since I got to USC, just haven’t quite put tournaments together. It was nice to get a good result this early in the season.”
