Cal Places Fourth At MacKenzie Invitational

Matthew Miyamoto carded a hole-in-one Tuesday at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. It is Cal’s third ace in two stroke-play events this fall.

Daniel Heo’s Fourth-Place Individual Finish Leads All Bears

FAIRFAX – Papon Sawatyanon carded his third consecutive 4-under-par 67 and Matthew Miyamoto sunk the Golden Bears’ third ace of the early season, but the California men’s golf team could not make up ground on the final day of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club.
 
Cal (266-270-274—810) finished at 42-under-par for its second straight fourth-place finish to start the season, dropping one spot on the leaderboard during Tuesday’s third round. The Bears entered Tuesday nine shots off of day-one leader Pacific, but it was San Jose State that came away with a nail-biting one-stroke win over the Tigers, finishing with a tournament-record score of 796 (-56). Spartan Zubair Firdaus (-23) won individual medalist, setting a tournament 56-hole-record with a 190.
 
Sawatyanon ended the home tournament as the Cal lineup’s top finisher, shooting a 4-under-par 67 in the third round to cap an 11th-place finish individually. The senior was nearly bogey-free Tuesday, notching five birdies on holes 1, 6, 13, 16 and 18 to counter a bogey on 15. Wenliang Xie put together a third-round 68 – highlighted by an eagle on hole 16 – to earn a tie for 13th (202, -11), while Miyamoto tied for 18th at 10-under (203). Miyamoto, playing in his second collegiate tournament, was hot on the front nine, tallying three birdies to go along with his hole-in-one on the 165-yard hole 8. Two bogeys and a double on the back nine dropped him out of the top 10 individually, however.
 
Playing as an individual, Daniel Heo was the most impressive Bear throughout the tournament on the way to a tie for fourth place with a collegiate-best 197 (-16). The junior shot 64 on Tuesday, carding seven birdies and an eagle on hole 1. Heo is playing well to start the fall slate, having already tied for sixth at The Tindall – with a previous collegiate-best 54-hole score of 206 – and winning his match in the annual Big Match against Stanford.
