THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – USC men’s golf got off to a solid start placing three golfers within the top 20 individually. The Trojans totaled a one-under-par, 283, putting them third out of 14 teams at the Southwestern Invitational on Monday, Jan. 27, at the Sherwood Country Club.
The Trojans sit third amongst 14 teams, including seven top-25 teams, as they counted 69-70-71-73 (283, -1). San Diego State leads after day one at -8 (276).
Junior Antonio Safa opened his spring season with his third round in the 60s (including fall), carding a 69 (-2). Safa is tied for fifth in the field. The junior excelled at the beginning of the round, birding three straight holes – No. 13-15 – before finishing the rest of his round one-over par.
Sophomore Jack Jerge ranked second on the USC leaderboard and is tied for 10th in the field with a one-under-par 70. Jerge’s round hosted highs and lows as he had a season-high eight birdies, with one bogey and three double-bogeys. Freshman Jaden Dumdumaya rounded out the top half of the lineup as Dumdumaya made his first career start for the Trojans. The freshman finished strong after going two-over par on the back nine, as he evened it out with two birdies on the final nine. Dumdumaya is tied for 16th after one round of play.
The final counting score for USC came from freshman Jack Buchanan. Buchanan posts a 73 (+2) and is currently tied for 29th. Senior Gavin Aurilia was four-over par and is tied for 42nd out of 75 golfers.
“We had some bumps along the round today but for the most part our guys were locked in, stayed patient and played smart throughout the round,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins.
USC heads into round two at the Southwestern Invitational starting at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow at the Sherwood Country Club.
