Lu Sparks Huskies On Day One In Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The Washington women’s golf team concluded the first day of the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club Friday afternoon, finishing the day in a tie for fifth place out of the 12 competing schools.

After 27 holes, three teams are shooting under par, led by Florida State, Virginia, and TCU tied for first at four-under par.

Vivian Lu led the Dawgs after 27 holes Friday, good for a tie for seventh place after shooting two-under 72 on the 18-hole first round and two-under nine holes into round two.

Lu notched five birdies in the opening round and two in the final nine of the day.

Freshmen Athena Ni and Wendy Tang made their collegiate debuts for the Huskies on Friday.

Ni recorded an eagle on the ninth as well as two birdies, finishing four-over on day one. Tang earned a birdie of her own on the fourth hole.

“We got off to a difficult start but that was not a total surprise as we have two freshmen playing in their first collegiate competition,” said Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “But we were able to settle down quite nicely after our first four or five holes. We have a lot of golf left tomorrow.”

The Huskies will re-pair after Friday’s competition based on results and play another 27 holes Saturday. Action is set to begin again at Guadalajara Country Club at 6 a.m. PT.
