WAIMEA, Hawaii – It was a mixed bag for the Washington men’s golf team on Thursday during the opening round of the Amer Ari, finishing the day one shut under par.
Facing an exceptionally loaded field at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club, the Huskies will enter Friday’s second round tied for 18th after posting a 287.
“It was a tough day for us overall,” said head coach Alan Murray. “Amongst our five guys we had a total of 19 dropped shots, which really makes it tough to compete when you are playing a course where you know birdies are required.”
Brock Maulding leads the huskies into round two, tied for 51st on the leaderboard. Maulding shot two-under for the day with three birdies and one bogey to set a career-low round of 70.
“It was the first under par college round from Brock Maulding today, who had his best round as a Husky,” Murray said. “He was really steady and tidy.”
Abel Derksen and Jack Murphy are both tied for 74th at the end of the day at even par. Drew Warford and Finn Koelle finished up for the Huskies, tied for 86th and 104th, respectively. Warford wrapped up round one a single shot over par, with Koelle two shots back of him.
“We need to capitalize on the par fives tomorrow and be much cleaner as a group,” Murray said.
The second round of play will commence with another shotgun start, with Washington teeing off at 9:30 a.m. PT, paired with Hawaii, San Jose State and Texas Tech.
