CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – After winning a nation-best five tournaments during the 2024-25 campaign, North Carolina senior David Ford was named the recipient of the 2025 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel on Tuesday, May 27.
Created by the Haskins Commission, the Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel honors the “Most Outstanding Collegiate Golfer of the Year.” Known as the “Heisman of Golf,” the award has been named in honor of Fred Haskins, who dedicated his career as head professional at the Country Club of Columbus to teaching junior golfers the art of competitive golf. The Haskins Award winner is selected annually by a vote of Division I players, coaches, SIDs, members of the college golf media and past Haskins Award winners.
Ford becomes the 15th player from a current Atlantic Coast Conference school to earn the award and first since Florida State’s John Pak in 2021. The Peachtree Corners, Georgia, native also becomes the first Tar Heel to earn the honor since John Inman in 1984.
Entering the postseason as the No. 1 player in the Scoreboard individual rankings, Ford secured five medalist honors this season, bringing his career total to a program-record seven titles. His 2024-25 season was headlined by winning three straight individual championships at the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational (March 24-25), the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational (April 5-6) and the Tar Heel Intercollegiate (April 12-13). Before Ford, no UNC player had ever won three consecutive individual titles.
Despite not qualifying for the NCAA Championships, Ford still amassed enough points over the past two years to secure the No. 1 spot in the PGA TOUR University standings, securing his professional card for the remainder of the 2025 season and all of 2026. Since the PGA TOUR created the PGA TOUR U program, Ford is the third player from a current ACC school to earn the honor, following Pak in 2021 and Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen in 2024.
Ford is also a finalist for the 2025 NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus Award, joining Florida State’s Luke Clanton, with that honor scheduled to be announced on Sunday, June 1.
