University of North Carolina junior Reagan Southerland chipped in for a birdie on the final hole to win her first collegiate tournament, earning a three-way tie for medalist at the Tar Heels’ first event of the spring, the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R.
Southerland shot 66-67-73 for 10-under 206 to tie for first with Arkansas’ Abbey Schutte and Kansas State’s Jiarui Chen. Southerland set personal 54-hole collegiate bests for fewest strokes and score to par. Her opening-round 66 on Sunday equaled her low round as a Tar Heel (she also shot 66 in the Mason Rudolph Championship last September).
The Tar Heels (276-279-297) finished fifth after shooting 9-over 297 on Monday to finish 12-under 852.
Arkansas (23-under 841) won the team title by six strokes over Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. LSU was fourth (-14) and Carolina placed fifth.
Megan Streicher carded an even-par 72 for the Tar Heels’ low round today. Streicher (70-71-72) tied for 15th at 3-under 213.
Marie Prats-Rigual (71-69-77) and Helen Yeung (69-72-76) tied for 36th at 1-over 217.
The Tar Heels return to competition February 23-24 in the Chevron Collegiate in Humble, Texas.
