Wildcats Begin Quest For Second National Title on Friday

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Arizona Men’s Golf will look to follow up its championship at NCAA Regionals in Bryan, Texas last week with another title run at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, beginning at 6:30 a.m. (MST) on Friday, May 27. The Wildcats are part of the 30-team field at Grayhawk Golf Club vying for its second national championship in program history.

“We are excited to tee it off in our home state at a course we are very familiar with,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Our shot-by-shot, hole-by-hole approach at NCAA Regionals was very successful for our entire lineup, and we will follow that same mantra at NCAA Championships. Playing in Scottsdale in May is the goal of every program in the nation, and I look forward to seeing our guys compete for a national championship while wearing the Block A.”

The Wildcats will play the same lineup of five from its NCAA Bryan Regional championship of Christian Banke, Chase Sienkiewicz, Johnny Walker, Sam Sommerhauser and Chaz Aurilia with Aidric Chan making the trip up I-10 as the reserve player. Arizona is returning to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2011 and for a 28th time in program history.

Arizona’s participation in Scottsdale this week marks the fifth tournament the Wildcats will play inside the state of Arizona this season. The Cats won their home tournament, the Arizona Intercollegiate, for a fifth consecutive year in January to go along with a pair of runner-up finishes at tournaments this season.

The top of the Wildcat lineup includes First Team All-Pac-12 selection Christian Banke who claimed the individual title at his team’s win at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Junior Chase Sienkiewicz repeated as a Second Team All-Pac-12 selection this season who finished runner-up on the individual leaderboard at the NCAA Bryan Regional.

The format of the NCAA Championships is three rounds of stroke play through the first three days with a cut down to the top 15 teams for the fourth and final day of stroke play. The top eight teams after four days of stroke play will advance to match play to determine a national champion.

Arizona is joined by Kansas and Oregon in its Friday morning group going off the first hole, beginning at 6:32 a.m. (MST). Admission is free for fans to attend the event with Grayhawk Golf Club offering complimentary parking.
