UW Tied For 2nd, Deng Tied For 3rd After Day One At NCAA Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Washington women’s golf team finished Monday’s first round at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional tied for second place, while sophomore Stefanie Deng completed the round in a tie for third, at 1-under.
 
Deng was one of just four women to complete the first 18 holes at the University of Michigan Golf Course with a score under par. She tied with one other golfer after shooting a 70 on Monday, with two golfers sharing the lead at 2-under.
 
UW freshman Kennedy Knox is also near the top of the leaderboard, as her 1-over 72 placed her in a tie for fifth place.
 
Washington will head into Tuesday’s second round just two shots off the lead after an opening-round team score of 9-over 293. Arkansas carded a 7-over 291 to earn the top spot. Washington is tied with host Michigan in third, while Virginia and top-seeded San Jose State are just one shot behind them, at 10-over.
 
“I’m super proud of the work and thought that was put into today’s round,” said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It was very windy which made it extremely difficult to judge distances into greens. It was a total team effort today, really.”
 
The four lowest-scoring teams after three rounds will earn a berth to the NCAA National Championships later this month in Scottdale, Ariz.
 
Deng compiled her 1-under score thanks to three birdies and two bogies, finishing her round with a birdie-3 on No. 18.
 
“Stef’s round was fantastic, to say the least,” said Mulflur. “All five players stayed patient and made good decisions for the most part. We’re excited to keep doing what we are doing.”
 
Knox was 3-over through 12 holes before notching two birdies and four pars over her final six holes. Jamie Hsieh turned in the third-best UW scorecard, shooting a 3-over 74, tying her for 23rd place. Camille Boyd and Brittany Kwon both shot 6-over 77s, tying them for 41st.
 
Washington will tee off with the leaders Tuesday in round two, beginning at 9:06 a.m. Eastern Time.
