No. 18 Florida State Completes Play In Old Barnwell Match Play Championships

AIKEN, S.C. – Alabama won the final two matches against Florida State to give the Crimson Tide and 3-2 victory over the Seminoles in the final match for both teams on the Old Barnwell Match Play Championship at the Old Barnwell Golf Course. The Seminoles earned victories by sophomore Elin Pudas Remler and Alexandra Gazzoli on the final day of the championship, and will now look forward to playing host to the Florida State Match Up at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club beginning Friday (March 20).

The Seminoles enter the Match Up as the defending champion and look forward to hosting one of top tournaments in women’s golf on their home course. The Seminoles enter the event as the defending champion and have won the event a tournament record five times.

Pudas Remler put the first point on the board for the Seminoles as she defeated Alabama’s Harriet Lockley, 4&3, to put Florida State up, 1-0. She took the lead on the first hole of the match and never trailed. Pudas Remler led through the first nine holes (the Seminoles started on hole No. 10) before Lockley tied the match on the first hole of the second nine for the pair. Pudas Remler countered as she won the next two holes to go two holes up. She would be four holes up with three holes remaining to be played to clinch the victory.

Gazzoli never trailed in her match as she defeated Mattison Frick of Alabama by a 6&5 margin. The pair tied the first hole, and Gazzoli won four the next five holes to take command of the match. Gazzoli won eight of the 13 holes played, including each of the final five holes of the match to gain the victory and vault the Seminoles into a 2-0 team lead.

The Seminoles play host to the jewel of their schedule – the Florida State Match Up at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club – this upcoming weekend. The event runs from Friday (March 20) through Sunday (March 22) with admission and parking at no cost. The first tee time on Friday and Sunday is 8:45 a.m.
