NEWBURGH, Ind. – Fighting Illini men’s golf alumni Thomas Detry and Nick Hardy are in solid standing and looking for strong finishes with PGA Tour cards on the line as the Korn Ferry Tour Playoff comes to a close with the Korn Ferry Tour Championship this week at Victoria National Golf Club.
Detry (T10) and Hardy (T13) each sit within The Finals 25 standings through the first two of three Korn Ferry Tour Finals events. Top-25 finishes will secure PGA Tour Cards for the 2022-23 season.
Detry, a mainstay on the DP World Tour since 2017, took a big step with a tie for fourth at the Boise Open two weeks ago to give himself 200 points, just 10 points back of the fail-safe threshold of 210. Hardy, a rookie on the PGA Tour this season, tied for 15th in Boise, and grabbed a share of 28th last week at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, and sits at 160 points.
While the two former Illini enter the week knowing they still have some work to do in order to reach their goals, they are familiar with the setting and have each enjoyed success at Victoria National.
In 2016, Detry and Hardy, then a senior and sophomore for the Illini, respectively, helped the Orange and Blue post one of the best rounds in collegiate history in the final round of the Big Ten Championship on the track. Detry carded a closing 64 (-8) and Hardy shot a 67 (-5) as the Illini combined to shoot a program-record round of 264 (-24) to turn an eight-stroke deficit into a 13-shot win. Detry’s performance, a 54-hole tally of 206 (-10), won Big Ten medalist honors, while Hardy finished in a tie for 20th at 218 (+2).
Detry is set to tee off Thursday at 7:56 a.m. CT, while Hardy opens his round at 12:27 p.m.
