GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Four Atlantic Coast Conference men’s golf teams advanced from NCAA Regional play and will compete at the NCAA Championship, May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Wake Forest all finished in the top five of their respective NCAA Regional to earn a spot in the national championship field.
ACC Champion Wake Forest won the New Haven (Conn.) Regional with a 26-under par score of 814, followed by North Carolina at 19-under par (821). The Demon Deacons led wire-to-wire with four players finishing among the top eight, including Alex Fitzpatrick (-9), who finished second, Michael Brennan (-7), who tied for fourth, and Scotty Kennon (-4) and Mark Power (-4), who tied for eighth. Wake Forest will be making its 47th NCAA Championship appearance.
North Carolina’s Austin Greaser won the New Haven individual competition with a 10-under par 200, posting rounds of 68, 63 and 69. Teammate Ryan Gerard tied for third at -9. The Tar Heels will be making their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship and 47th overall. Last year, Carolina advanced to the NCAA match play competition before falling to Arizona State in the quarterfinals.
Georgia Tech tied for the Columbus (Ohio) Regional title with Oklahoma State. The Yellow Jackets were in fifth place after round one, but shot the best round of the tournament on the second day with a 13-under par 271 and followed up with a 3-under par round of 281 on Wednesday. Three Yellow Jackets finished inside the top 10, including Ross Steelman (-6) in second, Benjamin Reuter (-2) tied for fourth and Connor Howe (-1) tied for seventh. Georgia Tech will be making its 31st appearance at the NCAA Championship.
Florida State fired a three-day total of 862 to finish 2-under par and in second place behind Vanderbilt at the Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) Regional. FSU sophomore Brett Roberts won the regional after carding a 7-under par 209. Roberts was seven shots off the lead after round one, but had rounds of 68 and 67 to come from behind for a two-shot victory. Teammate Daniel Bradbury tied for eighth at 2-under. The Seminoles will be making their 27th all-time appearance at the NCAA Championship.
