SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Arizona Men’s Golf will officially begin its 2022-23 season as part of a loaded field at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The Wildcats will be joined by 17 other programs for the weekend at Mirabel Golf Club Golf, including eight teams who ended last season ranked in the top 25 of the GolfStat rankings.
“Opening the year in a desert golf setting that’s similar to the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk is an ideal way to start our season,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “We are excited to compete in the Maui Jim again this year as it has developed into one of the premier Fall tournaments in all of college golf. I feel really good about our group of experienced returners with some talented newcomers on our roster. I know our team is excited to tee it off and start the year off strong.”
The Wildcats return nine golfers from a season ago, including four who started in the lineup at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Arizona won two tournaments last season as well as earning a pair of runner-up finishes that included its first NCAA Regional championship since 2006. The returners include senior Chase Sienkiewicz who was a Second Team All-Pac-12 selection a year ago. He and freshman Zach Pollo qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in New Jersey last month.
Arizona opened its 2021-22 and 2019-20 seasons at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, finishing in seventh and second place respectively. The team’s top individuals in those years were Aidric Chan who finished in third at 9-under par in 2019 and Sam Sommerhauser who carded 13-under to finish in a tie for sixth last year.
The Maui Jim Intercollegiate is a 54-hole event over three days with Arizona teeing off at 8 a.m. (MST) on Friday, playing alongside Clemson and Florida State.
