Spartans Tied for Fourth Place at Cougar Classic


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team shot a 4-under par 564 and is one of two teams tied for fourth place among 18 teams after the first day of play at the Cougar Classic, being held at Yeamans Hall in Charleston, S.C.

Teams played 36 holes in the first day of play on Monday and close with 18 holes in the final round on Tuesday.

Day One Results

The Spartans shot a 3-under par 281 in the first round on Monday and closed with a 1-under par 283.

Ole Miss leads the highly-competitive field, which includes 12 teams ranking among the top-50 in the country by Golfweek, at 13-under par 555. Clemson and North Carolina are tied for second place at 5-under par 555, while the Spartans are tied for fourth place with Florida State.

A pair of sophomores are among the top-20 individuals and lead the Spartans. Brooke Biermann is tied for 12th place at 3-under par 139 after rounds of 2-under par 69 and 1-under par 70 respectively. Classmate Katie Lu shot a 2-unde par 140 and is tied for 17th place. She fired a 4-under par 67 in the second round, tied for the second-lowest round of the day.

Junior Valentina Rossi is tied for 35th place at 1-over par 143, with rounds of even-par 71 and 1-over par 72.

Fifth year Valery Plata fired a 3-under par 68 over the opening 18 holes, but struggled with a 5-over par 76 in the second round and is tied for 43rd place at 2-over par 144.

Junior Nina Rissi is tied for 67th place at 6-over par 148, posting back-to-back rounds of 3-over par 74.

The Spartans will tee off in Tuesday’s final round starting at 8:45 a.m., playing alongside Florida State and Miami.
