KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Momo Sugiyama, the first signee by head coach Zack Byrd, proved to make an immediate impact for Purdue Women’s Golf in her debut. The Hawaii transfer carded a final-round 68 (-3) and finished tied for 21st to lead the Boilermakers at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
As a team, Purdue placed 10th (+15) following a 2-over 286 in the final round. After a pair of 73s in the first two rounds, Sugiyama’s bogey-free 68 moved her to 1-over for the tournament to lead all Boilermakers.
Another golfer playing in her first tournament for Purdue, redshirt-freshman Jade Gu shot 72 (+1) in round three to finish at 3-over and just outside the Top 25 on the individual leaderboard. Gu made par on 40 of the 54 holes, the second-most in the 78-player field.
Matching Gu with a final-round 72 was Danielle du Toit. The senior’s round featured three birdies and four bogeys to go along with 11 pars. Du Toit shook off her opening round, playing the final 36 holes in red figures (-1).
Jocelyn Bruch contributed to Purdue’s final round, carding a 74 (+3). For the second day in a row, she birdied her first hole to get off to a fast start. Adding a pair of birdies over her final five holes, the sophomore battled to post the respectable score.
Up next, Purdue returns to the Windy City Collegiate Classic (Oct. 3-4). Competing in the event for the ninth straight season, the Boilermakers head to Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.
