TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 14 Florida State Men’s Golf prepares for the inaugural Folds of Honor Collegiate beginning on Monday, a tournament that is dedicated to families of fallen or disabled military and first responders. The three-day tournament takes place at a specially designed Jack Nicklaus course at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.
“There are a lot of things in life that are more important than golf,” FSU redshirt junior Cole Anderson said. “The fact that we get to go play in a tournament to play and compete and show our respect to the people that make it possible for us to compete…We live in a country where we can go chase our dreams and do whatever we see fit. Without them, that’s not the case. For us to be able to play in this event is something special and is something we don’t take for granted.”
The inaugural tournament features 18 schools: Air Force, Arizona, Army, Central Michigan, Clemson, Eastern Michigan, Florida State, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Kansas, Liberty, Michigan State, Navy, NC State, Oregon State, Texas Southern, UCLA, and Virginia Union.
Annually, the tournament will feature two HBCU programs. This reflects the 41 percent of Folds of Honor recipients that are minorities and the GCAA and Black Golf Coaches Association of America partnership to help grow opportunities for HBCU and black college golf.
American Dunes Golf Club is a tribute to the military, and is a dunes-like course that measures 7,213 yards at a par 72.
Florida State traveled Michael Mays, Luke Clanton, Brett Roberts, Gray Albright and Anderson for the tournament. Mays leads off Monday with an 11:15 a.m. tee time.
Anderson has been red-hot for Florida State in its two fall tournaments, finishing second at the season-opening Maui Jim Intercollegiate and sixth at Olympia Fields. His last round was a 64 which tied for the lowest round at the Olympia Fields Invitational.
FSU Head Coach Trey Jones reflected on the honor of playing in such a prestigious tournament, which provides some familiarity being on a Jack Nicklaus designed course like the Seminole Legacy Club.
“We’re just honored to be a part of it,” FSU Head Coach Trey Jones said. “(It’s great) to be able to help and to give back to different parts, whether it’s the veterans or the first responders.”
