VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Jake Hall, Lance Simpson and Bryce Lewis each shot 6-under or better during the opening 36 holes and the 12th-ranked Tennessee men’s golf team is 23-under and in third place entering the final round of stroke play at the SEC Fall Preview.
After competing in two rounds of stroke play on Sunday, the tournament field—consisting of all 14 SEC teams—is set to play a final round of stroke play on Monday before each team competes in a round of match play on Tuesday and against an opponent to be determined. The top two team finishers from stroke play will square off in the final groupings of the day, while the 12 other teams will square off in East vs. West Match Play format.
Entering the final round of stroke play, Tennessee is just one stroke back from qualifying for Tuesday’s match play final—the Vols (23-under) sit just behind Auburn (24-under). Tennessee is 10 strokes clear of the tournament’s current fourth-place team—Georgia (13-under).
The Vols were consistent across both rounds Sunday, shooting 12-under in round one as compared to 11-under in round two.
Hall led the charge for Tennessee, shooting 8-under for the day on Sunday—3-under in round one and 5-under in round two. The Knoxville native is in fourth place and just two strokes out of the individual lead entering round three after making 13 birdies—tied for the most in the 70-man field—over the first two rounds.
Just one stroke back from Hall is redshirt freshman Lance Simpson. Competing in his second career collegiate tournament, Simpson shot 7-under on Sunday and is tied for fifth place. Simpson also made a field-high-tying 13 birdies.
Lewis gave Tennessee its third golfer inside the top 10, shooting 6-under and coming in tied for ninth place through two rounds. Simpson and Lewis have now both shot at or below par in four of five rounds so far this fall.
Tennessee’s final counting round came from true freshman Caleb Surratt, who shot even par on Sunday. Surratt, coming off winning the Maui Jim Invitational earlier this month in his first career collegiate tournament, is tied for 36th place.
Cade Russell shot 3-over on Sunday and is tied for 57th place entering Monday.
