East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a final round 5-over par 293 on Wednesday afternoon and finished in seventh place among 18 teams at the inaugural Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Course in Grand Haven, Mich.
The tournament, hosted by Michigan State, the Folds of Honor and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), benefitted the Folds of Honor and the GCAA Presidential Scholar Fund. Folds of Honor is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military members who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It was founded by Lt Col Dan Rooney, the only-ever F-16 fighter pilot and PGA Professional, who is currently stationed at Eglin AFB, Florida as a member of the 301st Fighter Squadron.
In a field that included nine teams ranked among the top-60 in the country by Golfstat, the Spartans (No. 46) finished in seventh place at 19-over par 883 (295-295-293).
“Obviously, we’re disappointed with our finish and I know we all expect more from this team and I think we will get there and that we have a chance to be a very good golf team,” Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. “Results aside, hosting the Folds of Honor has been one of the best events during my career and I know it was incredibly special for our guys to be a part of this event. American Dunes is one of the best courses out there and the work done by Folds of Honor to recognize and remember those who have represented our country is something that won’t be forgotten by any of the young men who played in this event.”
Illinois (No. 18), fired a 10-under par 854 and topped the field, finishing 15 shots ahead of second place Arizona, the runner-up at 5-over par 869.
